There is no universal UK grant that gives every homeowner free solar panels. Support depends on location, household eligibility and active local or supplier schemes. Always check before signing a contract.

Smart Export Guarantee

The Smart Export Guarantee is not an installation grant. It requires participating electricity suppliers in Great Britain to offer payment for eligible low-carbon electricity exported to the grid. Suppliers set their own rates, contract lengths and terms.

  • Compare current export tariffs independently.
  • Check metering and certification requirements.
  • Do not assume the export rate used in a sales quotation will remain available.

Zero-rate VAT

Qualifying professionally installed solar panels and electrical storage batteries are currently zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. The installer is responsible for applying the correct VAT treatment. This is a tax relief, not cash paid to the homeowner.

England and Wales

Some eligible lower-income or vulnerable households may receive support through energy-company or local-authority schemes. Availability and qualifying measures change, so contact your council and energy supplier and verify the scheme on an official website.

Scotland

Home Energy Scotland no longer provides new funding offers for solar PV or battery storage; that support ended in June 2024. Other targeted or council-led schemes may exist, but solar should not be advertised as universally grant-funded.

Northern Ireland

The Smart Export Guarantee does not apply in Northern Ireland. Ask NI Energy Advice and electricity suppliers about current support and export arrangements.

Avoid grant scams

  • Do not rely on social-media adverts claiming everyone qualifies.
  • Never pay an “application fee” without verifying the scheme independently.
  • Check the installer in the MCS and consumer-code registers.
  • Do not sign before written eligibility and funding terms are confirmed.
  • Check who owns the equipment and whether any finance or lease is secured against it.
